'TTI Green Genetics will put genetics to work'

 

Mission: TTI Green Genetics develops and applies knowledge about plant genetics, in order to enable breeders to create crops with improved quality and performance.

 

Plants are the basis of life on earth. For centuries, people have selected and grown plants that best fit their needs in feeding their cattle and themselves. By doing this, they developed new crops with better quality, higher yields and more efficient farming practice.

Although such plant breeding has been very successful, multifactor traits involved in quality and resistance to pests and diseases have proven extremely difficult to improve. The recent revolution in life sciences through molecular biotechnology and genomics has dramatically changed the scale and scope of our possibilities in plant breeding. This has enabled a detailed genetic understanding of plant performance at various levels. The complex biological mechanisms that underlie pest and pathogen resistance and quality of our crops are now open to systematic functional analysis.

TTI Green Genetics aims to make this analysis possible by giving financial contributions to innovative research projects in which plant breeding companies work together with knowledge institutions. This way, also a strong knowledge base is created and capacity building in the Dutch cultivation sector is promoted. This is essential for the Netherlands to keep its leading position in the international plant breeding sector.
